Centennial Sculpture Park Walk

The Centennial Sculpture Park Walk uses location tracking to give users information about nearby sculptures, which can be accessed via red boxes that appear next to the appropriate sculpture.

The ultimate goal of this project was to create an interactive and informative experience at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery’s Centennial Sculpture Park. When looking for potential ideas for this AR project, we found the sculpture park and thought it seemed like a super interesting location to work on, it’s a free to access public space where just about anyone can see fine art. After looking into the park more and visiting it for ourselves, we found that most of the information about these sculptures was hidden away on the MAG’s website, and unlikely to be found by anyone walking around the park. So, we decided to make that information quickly, and easily accessible, via these clickable boxes that open up a UI that shows information about the sculptures that can typically only be found on the MAG’s website. By doing this, we hoped to make the park more interactive and engaging by providing a unique way to learn more about these sculptures.

Our first step in making this project was using locar.js, which was definitely the biggest obstacle we faced this semester. We kept running into constant errors with locar that made hosting our project online a massive headache, but eventually we got locar working.

After we got locar working, we got to work on basic functionality, the first thing we did was make a json file with all of our information for every sculpture. We gave every sculpture a title, description, and a location (latitude and longitude). Then, we took this information and created cubes at each sculpture’s location, and we made all of these cube’s clickable, so that whenever you click a cube, a user interface shows up that display’s information about that cube’s sculpture.

After we finished up all of the functionality, we went out to the Centennial Sculpture Park to test the results for ourselves. Below is a slideshow of some of the images we got of our project, as well as a video of us walking through the park and testing out our project for some of these sculptures.

That’s everything for this project, if you’re interested in testing it out for yourselves, then click here.
