Echoes from Mt. Hope, or just simple Echoes, is an interactive AR experience that invites participants to envelope themselves within the gates of Mt. Hope Cemetery. Developed as a ‘scavenger hunts’ of sorts, Echoes asks the user to use their own sense of Rochester history and geographical understanding to decipher the clues to find an important location of historical or geographical significance in an effort to discover all six points of interest.

Susan B. Anthony’s headstone is just one of the few locations of significance
This application was created over the course of a few months with the final proposal being locked in on March 3, 2025. From there we slowly decided on the level of assets we wanted to display to the users, if we were happy with our points of interest, and how intrusive we wanted the application to be in context with exploring The Cemetery.
Development was at many times put on the back burner, as this development team also worked together for our Senior Capstone Project, Overboard. As a result of committing our time to that other team (consisting of eight additional designers), the depth we wanted to reach with our user interface and assets wasn’t initially what we had planned out. If we could go back, we likely would have hit those areas.
However, our core functionality is in place and we are happy with the end result. While we think our Professor may have enjoyed some of a deeper dive into the history of some of these points of interest within the application, our ultimate goal of Echoes was to get users to think about the history around them. Our light but fun interactive only serve for users to take a deeper look at some of the points of interest, and hopefully come to their own conclusions about the significance and beauty found within Mt. Hope Cemetery.
